SoundCell wins Innovator Award

SoundCell is a spin-off of TU Delft that aims at developing and commercializing graphene biosensors for rapid Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing (AST). SoundCell’s biosensor represents a state-of-the-art leap forward in terms of sensitivity and speed compared to the available AST technologies as it traces the effectiveness of antibiotics on nanomechanical vibrations of bacteria with single-cell resolution, using a large array of ultrasensitive graphene sensors. By reducing the current antibiotic sensitivity timeframe from 2 days to 1 hour, SoundCell technology not only ensures correct administration of antibiotics within 24 hours of infection identification, but it also significantly reduces hospital stays, especially for costly Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stays due to antibiotic resistance.

AlphaPace wins Rough Diamond Award

A new cancer treatment, Target Alpha Therapy (TAT), shows promising results in treating cases where cancer has spread. In TAT, a patient is injected with radiopharmaceuticals consisting of linkage molecules that carry a radioactive load (Actinium-225) which eliminates the cancer cells. Yet the correct quality assurance for this new medicine is missing as current systems perform the indirect measuring of radioactive substances. They require the substance to decay in detectable daughter particles. This causes costly process delays that lower treatment effectiveness while simultaneously raising safety risks for patients. AlphaPace offers the solution to this by directly measuring the quality of the radiopharmaceutical. They provide an integrated solution consisting of a detector, integrated software, and cartridges holding test strips. The detector leverages the unique capabilities of the TimePix3 chip from CERN that enables near real-time detection of alpha, beta, and gamma particles. This means that AlphaPace can perform the test within 20 minutes instead of 2 hours, improving the ease, effectiveness, and cost-efficiency of the treatment. Furthermore, the technology is portable, requires little training, and operates at a low cost. Through all of this, AlphaPace aims to make cancer a safely treatable disease.

Kick-off Event

To mark the start of the 2024 trajectory, all semi-finalists and business panel members were invited to our kick-off event. During the event, they had the opportunity to network while enjoying live music and drinks. Next to building connections, Cas van de Voort from Weco – the Wave Energy Collective was our inspiring guest speaker.

Coaching Day

The first training day of our trajectory was the coaching day. Held at the headquarters of our platinum partner, KPN, all the semi-finalists participated in a comprehensive day of in-depth sessions with innovation teams from Philips, Equinix, KPMG, KPN, NS, and PGGM, intellectual property experts from Arnold & Siedsma, and experts in disruption from SparkOptimus and Deltares.

Platinum Partner Dinner

To emphasize our gratitude for the partners who have joined the Philips Innovation Award, we hosted a Platinum Partner Dinner at Hoogtij Amsterdam. Our Platinum Partners play a pivotal role in ensuring that the Philips Innovation Award has evolved from merely a pitch event to truly an accelerating trajectory, including numerous training days for our participating startups. It was an inspiring evening with individuals who share a passion for supporting innovation and making a difference.

Investor Day

Looking back on Investor Day! The goal of this day was to guide startups through the funding process, connect with potential investors, and offer insights on choosing the right funding strategy. It was a day full of pre-matched speed dating sessions with a wide range of early-stage investors from different fields: Arches Capital, Benedict Peax, David Cerda, FORWARD.one, Graduate Entrepreneur, Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland, IQ Capital, Lumo Labs, NextGen Ventures, Noaber, Rockstart, Shamrock Ventures, Slingshot Ventures, Tenzing Alpha, UNIIQ, Valor Ventures, and YES!Funded.

Find Your Talent Day

The first-ever edition of the PHIA Find Your Talent Day!

This new training day aims to connect startups seeking potential talent with end-phase students who might be looking for opportunities to work for a startup as an employee, intern, or co-founder.

We want to thank Leonne Dieleman from YES!Delft and Graciëlla van Vliet from Closure and Jochem.ai for their useful tips and insights regarding working for a startup and finding new talent.

Looking back, it has been a very fruitful addition to the PHIA trajectory!

Semi Final

The Semi-Final of the Philips Innovation Award, hosted for the first time at the Maassilo Rotterdam!

Visitors were welcome to explore the Innovation Market and attend multiple pitching sessions from the 30 participating start-ups throughout the day.

Grand Final

The 19th edition of the Grand Final was hosted at Theater Rotterdam, featuring eight startups competing for the award. These startups showcased their innovative ideas to our esteemed jury.
